Consciousness and cognitive functions:
We use cognitive processes to incorporate new knowledge and make decisions, they are part of consciousness. The cognitive functions are:
- memory
- attention
- orientation
- language
- praxias
- gnosis
- video space orientation
- social orientation
They give us the ability to perceive, imagine, make judgments and decide. Cognitive functions are carried out in the cerebral cortex, each area specialized in specific functions. The cerebral cortex is actually two hemispheres: right and left joined by the corpus callosum. The right hemisphere related to intuitive, artistic and left thinking with logical, rational and linear thinking. In turn, each hemisphere consists of four lobes separated by large grooves. The testing of each of the areas of the cerebral cortex will allow to find the point that should be impacted according to the function that is to be activated.
Brain lobes and functions
- frontal lobe: problem solving, language, motor function
- parietal lobe: sensory perceptions
- temporal lobe: emotions, sense of balance, hearing, smell, some visual functions (face recognition)
- occipital lobe: visual processing
- insula lobe (internal): sensation of internal organs (pain)
- limbic lobe (internal): emotions, learning, memory, attention, motivation
